What is Mahjong?
Mahjong is an ancient tile game that has endured through the centuries and has a broad appeal. The beauty of the tiles, the connection at the table, and the social and competitive aspects of the game make it a sure winner! There are over 40 varieties of Mahjong, all based on the original Chinese version. I teach American Mahjong, which is standard in the U.S. and I teach using official National Mah Jongg League rules.
What is included in a private event?
I bring everything to you - and I mean everything! If you want to host in your home, I bring tables, tablecloths, tiles, racks, mats, accessories, instruction manuals, and more! All I need from you is the date, location, and head count! If you have absolute beginners, we can cover Mahjong 101 content, or gear it more towards open or guided play, depending on your event!
Why should I play Mahjong?
Mahjong is a game of connection. It is social, interactive, and competitive. It never gets boring! There are over 1000 permutations of ways to win on this year’s League card alone. But it isn’t simple - that’s what keeps people engaged! There are always new challenges and new strategies to try! If you try it, you might just end up with a new favorite hobby!
What is covered in Mahjong 101?
Mahjong 101 includes ALL the basics of game play. We talk about the history of the game, introduce tiles and all the suits, introduce the card and how to read it, and begin basic game play. In a fun, encouraging setting, you’ll go from absolute beginner to confidently understanding the fundamentals of play. We’ll cover everything from the tiles to set-up to the basics of game play. By the end, you’ll be ready to join a game, connect with others, and enjoy the thrill of calling "Mahjong!"
What is covered in Mahjong 102?
Mahjong 102 reviews the basics of play, but delves deeper into strategy, Charleston tips, and pivoting.
We will focus on:
strategies for effective game play
scoring and payouts
specifics of National Mah Jongg League rules
the basics of tournament play
2 player (Siamese) Mahjong
3 player Mahjong
suggestions for hosting games and proper mahjong etiquette
